Reconstructive breast surgery: breast asymmetry

Most women have some degree of breast asymmetry due to differences in breast gland development. When more pronounced, this difference can be more noticeable or uncomfortable.

Reconstructive surgery aims to improve symmetry through breast augmentation, breast reduction or a combination of both techniques.

Coverage by French social security and supplementary health insurance may be available, subject to a prior authorisation request and approval by social security.

When breast augmentation is used:

+ How is the procedure performed?
You will have a consultation with an anaesthetist and receive preoperative instructions.
Breast imaging, such as mammography or ultrasound, may need to be reviewed.
Breast implants do not necessarily prevent breastfeeding and have not been shown to increase the risk of conventional breast cancer.

+ What type of anaesthesia is used?
Light general anaesthesia is generally used.

+ Where is the incision made?
Breast implants are inserted through a short incision in the breast crease, armpit or areola.

+ Where is the implant placed?
Two positions are possible with each incision approach:

Directly behind the breast gland, between the muscle and breast tissue;
Or beneath the pectoral muscles.
You will receive the necessary information and make this decision together with your surgeon.

+ How long does surgery take?
Breast augmentation takes around two hours, during which you are asleep.

When breast reduction is used:

+ How is the procedure performed?
You will have a consultation with an anaesthetist and receive preoperative instructions.

The surgeon removes glandular tissue to achieve the desired breast proportions.
The remaining tissue is reshaped to create a balanced contour.
Excess skin is removed, and the areola and nipple are adjusted where needed.
The incisions are closed, with the scar pattern depending on the degree of breast enlargement and ptosis.

+ What type of anaesthesia is used?
Light general anaesthesia is used.

+ What about scarring?
Scarring depends on the degree of breast enlargement and sagging.
Two main patterns are used: an inverted-T scar and a vertical scar, which is less extensive.
The choice is discussed during your consultation.

+ How long does surgery take?
Breast reduction takes around two hours, during which you are asleep.
