Reconstructive breast surgery: breast hypoplasia

Breast hypoplasia results from insufficient breast gland development during adolescence. The clinical description includes a cup size smaller than A, a difference of less than four centimetres between bust and underbust measurements, and associated psychological discomfort.

This condition can be corrected by placing a breast implant to increase breast volume.

How is the procedure performed?

You will have a consultation with an anaesthetist and receive preoperative instructions.
Breast imaging, such as mammography or ultrasound, may need to be reviewed.
Breast implants do not necessarily prevent breastfeeding and have not been shown to increase the risk of conventional breast cancer.

+ What type of anaesthesia is used?
Light general anaesthesia is generally used.

+ Where is the incision made?
Breast implants are inserted through a short incision in the breast crease, armpit or areola.

+ Where is the implant placed?
Two positions are possible with each incision approach:

Directly behind the breast gland, between the muscle and breast tissue;
Or beneath the pectoral muscles.

You will receive the necessary information and make this decision together with your surgeon.

+ How long does surgery take?
Breast augmentation takes around two hours, during which you are asleep.
