Skin surgery and dermatological surgery
Skin surgery, also known as dermatological surgery, covers surgical procedures on the skin, adjacent mucous membranes and nails. A spot, small lump, scab or mole may change gradually or remain benign. Regular examination under magnification is therefore essential.
If a lesion shows increasing changes, a biopsy may be needed so that the tissue can be examined under a microscope (histopathology).

How is the procedure performed?
When removal is required, these lesions are excised with a safety margin of healthy tissue. The prognosis depends on the findings of the microscopic examination.
A stable lesion (such as an epidermal cyst, sebaceous cyst or naevus — also known as a mole) may be monitored or removed for cosmetic reasons.
Regular follow-up is then arranged, together with advice on reducing exposure to risk factors (including sun protection and stopping smoking).
