Breast reconstruction after breast cancer

The procedure aims to restore breast volume and shape after a lumpectomy (partial removal of breast tissue) or mastectomy (removal of the whole breast).

Reconstruction may be immediate (during the same operation as the mastectomy) or delayed.

Breast volume and contour can be restored using:

  • A breast implant when the surrounding tissues are suitable;
  • A tissue expander followed by a breast implant;
  • A muscle and skin flap, using the latissimus dorsi muscle or rectus abdominis muscle.

The nipple and areola can be reconstructed three to six months later:

  • With medical tattooing of the areola;
  • With a local flap or graft to recreate the nipple.

The opposite breast may also be adjusted for symmetry as needed (augmentation, reduction or lifting). The different options will be discussed during your consultations.
