miraDry®: lasting reduction of underarm sweating
Have you ever felt embarrassed by sweat patches on your T-shirt or shirt? Do you avoid certain colours or fabrics because of sweating?
Some people produce more sweat than their body needs to regulate its temperature. This is known as excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis.
miraDry® can help reduce underarm sweating, sweat patches and odour.
Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis
Some people produce more sweat than their body needs to regulate its temperature. This is known as excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis.
Excessive sweating is often localised, affecting a particular area such as the underarms, hands or feet. It can also be generalised, affecting the whole body.
It may begin during childhood and become more noticeable around puberty, sometimes continuing into adulthood.
Hyperhidrosis can have a significant psychological, social and professional impact and may lead to social anxiety. miraDry® may be suitable for people experiencing excessive underarm sweating, following a medical assessment.
How does miraDry® work?
miraDry® uses microwave energy to generate heat and destroy the sweat glands responsible for underarm sweating, through a process known as thermolysis.
A cooling system helps protect the surrounding skin while the heat is targeted at the sweat glands.
Treatment can significantly reduce underarm sweat, odour and hair, sometimes after a single session. Results vary, and an additional session may be recommended.
What happens during a treatment session?
Wear loose-fitting clothing on the day of treatment. Your practitioner will advise when to shave your underarms before the appointment; follow the preparation instructions provided by the practice.
A template suited to the size of your underarms is used to mark the treatment area. The miraDry® handpiece is then placed against the underarm to deliver microwave energy to the selected area.
+ How long does treatment take?
Each underarm is treated for approximately 30 minutes.
+ What type of anaesthesia is used?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and usually takes 1 to 1½ hours in total. Small injections numb the underarms to minimise discomfort during treatment.
Recovery and results after miraDry®
A reduction in underarm sweating and odour may be noticeable soon after treatment. The degree of improvement varies between patients, and a further session may be needed.
Redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness or altered sensation may occur in the treated area. Many patients can return to work and everyday activities the following day, depending on their recovery. Avoid sport for the week after treatment, or as advised by your practitioner.
Underarm sweat glands represent only a small proportion of the body’s sweat glands. Reducing underarm sweating generally does not impair the body’s ability to regulate its temperature. However, treatment is not risk-free: burns, infection and nerve injury are among the possible complications. Your practitioner will discuss the risks and suitability of treatment with you.
miraDry® is designed to provide a lasting reduction in underarm sweating by destroying sweat glands, which do not regenerate. This does not guarantee complete elimination of sweating. The device has FDA clearance in the United States for the treatment of unwanted underarm sweat and odour, and permanent removal of unwanted underarm hair.
